Dealing With Criticism Effectively

Dealing With Criticism Effectively

One of my gorgeous Baby Business School students inspired me to write this blog. She posted in our group how she had been dealing with some criticism after making changes in her business. For those of you who are ready to step into your potential when it comes to growing a successful business be prepared to face criticism head on, you can't hide from it, in fact if you don't receive any, you're probably not putting yourself out there enough. If you wish to serve people in a bigger way, alongside making changes in your own life you have to start doing things differently. You have to start looking at things differently. You have to start acting differently. You have to start thinking differently. And at first that can feel really exciting. You might feel invincible, ready and like no-one can touch you as you suddenly start seeing and really believing that all of these new opportunities you’ve spotted can really create the difference you’re craving. Stop Selling Your Services

Sounds ridiculous right? You're doing everything leaftletting (so 1990's IMO) Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest - sporadically. Networking with your peers, talks at yoga centres every now and then, but it's still not happening.  Why? It's because you're selling your services.  You know I like to talk, but I'm going to keep this one short and sweet.  You’re a service based professional and you’re passionate about your job and the latest training you've undertaken. People ask you what you do and you real off 'it’s the original form of this, eight classes, one hour sessions, a bit of massage, some reflexology, blah, blah, blah. And you think you’re selling.   But you're not.  At best you're potential client will have exhausted all other options and you might be the cheapest, so they'll book on with you from the perspective of 'this'll do. It's cheap'. At worse you're bore the person into your competitors...

It’s funny because even though marketing and promotion are quite distinct I often see people making the mistake of treating the two disciplines as the same thing. So what is marketing? In layman’s terms it sharing with people what you do on a regular basis, without having anything specific to sell.  So when you write a blog without promoting a product, produce a vlog, help people within your target market in FB groups or networking. It’s marketing. What’s promotion? Promotion is when you have a specific message about a product or service to sell. To effectively promote you need to target your audience with clear messages about the thing you want to shout about. During your promotion period it is normal to increase the frequency of messages your audience would receive from you. So don’t feel embarrassed about it. The trick to an amazing marketing and promotion strategy is to get the balance between the two. Obvious right? So where’s the confusion? Often people think they are marketing when they are actually promoting. Or marketing when they should be promoting. Take a look at the Facebook pages you don’t like that are related to a products and services. I bet a high percentage of...
