Stop Coaching for Free: Why Your Gift Deserves to Be Paid For
Let’s be honest for a second,
You know that you’re good.
People come to you for advice, insight, support, and coaching, even if you don’t call it that. You’re the one they lean on. You’re the one they trust. You’re the one who gets it.
And yet…
You’re still not charging. Or you’re charging way below your worth.
You’re letting people pick your brain over coffee, sliding into your DMs with “quick questions,” or casually offloading their emotional world into your inbox and you respond, again and again.
Why?
Because it feels good to help.
Because you’re a natural.
Because “you’re not doing it for the money.”
Right?
But here’s what I need you to hear:
You. Are. Draining. Yourself.
You’re building everyone else’s life, but your own is on pause.
This is the wake-up call: Your gift is valuable. Your time is priceless and your energy is not free. And your coaching, whether you’ve been calling it that or not, is worth being paid for.
The Real Cost of Free Coaching
Let’s break it down:
- You’re burning out.
Even if it’s five minutes here and there, those minutes add up. And if you’re not being compensated for your time, you’re stealing from the one resource you can’t ever get back: your energy. - You’re not creating boundaries.
When you’re always available, always responding, always giving—people stop respecting your time. And worse, you stop respecting your own. - You’re robbing your clients of transformation.
Yes, I said it. When someone pays, they show up differently. They take the work seriously. When it’s free? It’s often ignored, forgotten, or half-acted on.
So, How Do You Actually Stop Coaching for Free?
1. Value your time like It’s important (Because It Is)
Would you hand out free petrol to strangers all day, every day? No.
So why are you giving away your only non renewable resource – your time for free, every day?
How many hours do you think you have given away in the last month?
Would you rather be being paid for that time?
If the answer is yes, the next question you get to ask yourself is: what would I be willing to let go of to start living a life where I got paid for coaching instead of giving it away for free?
This might be a practical thing – like your day job, or mindset – being willing to risk offending people by upholding your boundaries or something else entirely.
You don’t have to limit yourself to one thing either…ask yourself the question what else? Until you feel complete.
2. Have an Offer Even a Simple One
Here’s what happens when you don’t have something for people to buy:
You stay in the loop of overgiving because there’s nowhere for that energy to go.
Even if it’s a “Pick My Brain” 20-minute call for £25.
It would be a start and you would be on your way.
Have something they can say YES to.
The sooner you have an offer, the sooner you can start to sell it.
3. Actually Invite People to Buy It
Yes, this is the next step, having an offer is one thing, but if nobody knows it exists then you may as well not have one.
Let people know what you do.
Post about it.
Let people know the type of person you’re working with and ask them if they know anyone who fits the bill. It will feel as awkward as hell in the beginning…and then one day, you will get over it.
4. Legitimise Your Services with Training
Now listen. If you’re already in the healing, therapy, or personal development space, you might be resisting this.
But I’ll tell you what makes a massive difference:
✨ A proper coaching framework.
✨ Tools that increase your confidence and create real client results.
✨ Supervision and mentorship to sharpen your skill set.
This isn’t about a piece of paper. It’s about knowing how to facilitate transformation that sticks.
